The Last Summer Before the Dorm Room

By Sherrain · August 2025

You'll spend the whole summer pretending it isn't happening.

There will be a last trip to the store for school supplies that doesn't feel like a last anything. There will be a Tuesday where she eats cereal standing up and leaves, and you won't know until months later that it was the last Tuesday like that.

That's how this one goes. Not in the big goodbye. In the ordinary minutes you don't know are last.

Here's what I want to say to the woman in that summer.

Don't spend it performing the goodbye you think you're supposed to have. You don't have to squeeze meaning into every drive. Some of the best minutes of that summer will be the unremarkable ones — her music from the other room, the two of you in a parking lot eating something bad for you, not talking about any of it.

Let those be enough. They are the whole thing.

And notice, when you can, the woman underneath the mother. She's been there the whole time, running the schedule, knowing where everything is, being absolutely necessary. She's about to be retired without a ceremony. Nobody's going to throw her a party because nobody else can see she's leaving.

You can see her. That's the work of this summer. Not clinging. Not rehearsing grief. Just noticing — who am I underneath all the doing, and what does she want?

You probably don't know yet. That's fine. The question is enough for now.

When the house gets quiet — and it will, suddenly, in October — you'll be standing in it. And the woman who noticed herself this summer will have a head start on figuring out what comes next.
